Men and Addiction

If you know seeking addiction treatment help is the best way to overcome a drug or alcohol addiction but do not know how or where to start, you are not alone. Each year, more than 22 million American youth, teens, and adults live with symptoms of a substance use disorder. Research has shown that professional detox followed by a comprehensive addiction treatment program is the safest and most effective way to get sober and learn the tools needed to maintain lasting sobriety. So how do you choose the best detox and rehab programs for your needs?

Studies suggest that people seeking addiction recovery are more likely to complete detox and an entire course of drug or alcohol addiction treatment if they are in an environment where they feel comfortable, safe, and supported, communicating with their treatment providers and the other members of the treatment community. If you have started researching detox and treatment programs, you may have considered choosing a program that provides gender-focused treatment.

Different programs address gender-specific treatment needs in different ways. Some men’s detox programs offer their services in an entirely gender-specific setting. This means their therapeutic environment offers services for either women only or men only. Other programs, like Dallas Detox Center, offer comprehensive, evidence-based detox and addiction treatment programs designed to meet the gender-specific therapy needs of both men and women. While our Texas detox programs are open to all genders, we provide a range of therapeutic models that focus on the unique treatment needs of women and men as distinct treatment groups.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, there are fundamental biological and cultural differences between men and women regarding substance abuse and substance use disorders. Research has confirmed that biological differences exist in rates of dependence, choice of substance, and how the brain responds to substance use. Similar studies show that women and men have different reasons for substance use and other circumstances that trigger a relapse. Gender-specific detox programs and treatment centers in Dallas offering gender-specific treatment address each of the sexes’ unique needs in a compassionate and supportive environment.

The Pros of Men's Rehab

What Are the Benefits of Men's Only Detox?

The Pros of Men's Rehab

What Are the Benefits of Men's Only Detox?

Men have unique and specific needs as they take steps to begin detox and addiction treatment. Many of these involve stigmas and misconceptions about male stereotypes and perceived cultural roles. It is not uncommon for men to be fearful of entering a drug or alcohol rehab program because they worry about how others will perceive them. They are often concerned that others will believe they are weak or that others may judge them for “failing” to overcome addiction without seeking help. Perhaps worse, they fear that peers may look down on them for succumbing to drug or alcohol addiction in the first place.

Men often take longer in a treatment setting to feel comfortable opening up and disclosing their emotions or personal struggles in a group or even in private therapy sessions. Because of this, specific therapy models are often more beneficial and successful for men compared to other therapy options. Studies show men tend to respond better to treatment models designed to address specific negative thought patterns and behaviors rather than those therapy models that encourage introspection and self-examination. Another consideration addressed in male gender-specific rehab is that of male abuse (physical, emotional, or sexual).

Unfortunately, this is an issue that is often overlooked in traditional mixed-gender treatment settings. Although the subject of all types of abuse is a difficult topic for both genders, it is extremely sensitive for men-sometimes even more so than for women. Because of this, issues of abuse can be handled and addressed more openly and honestly in a single-gender setting. Male gender-specific programs provide an understanding and compassionate environment where men seeking sobriety can build strong peer support groups and develop the support foundation necessary for lasting recovery and sobriety.

How Does Substance Abuse
Impact Men?

Biology (at birth) plays a significant role in understanding why people turn to alcohol and drugs. National data indicates that biological gender is a vital component of many substance use and abuse risk factors. Examples of these include the type of substance one uses, the age they start using, the root causes that cause addiction (i.e., trauma, mental health, social factors, etc.), and how their body and brain react to alcohol or drugs.

For example, while women are more likely to experience challenges with prescription drug abuse, men are more likely to experience difficulties with marijuana and alcohol abuse. Biology is also linked to why men use drugs and alcohol. Studies show that men often begin using alcohol or drugs due to the perceived benefits of using. Men often turn to substances for benefits, including improved social skills, enhanced sexual drive, performance, better concentration, or improved athletic ability.

Another notable biological difference between men and women with substance use disorders involves the severity of alcohol or drug use patterns. Generally, men begin using at higher rates than women. Women are more likely to start using at lower rates, but the frequency of use and the rate of use escalates faster. Men are also more reluctant to seek addiction treatment; however, their admission rates to detox and treatment programs are statistically higher (67%) compared to women. Also, men typically present with fewer co-occurring mental health concerns when beginning treatment.

Recent data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates ongoing disproportionate levels of substance abuse and addiction in males from all demographics. According to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health, published in 2018, up to 12% of males over the age of twelve meet the diagnostic criteria for at least one substance use disorder, compared to a rate of less than 7% for females. This data suggests that women struggle with substance use disorders at nearly 50% of males.
