Texas Drug Rehab for Veterans

There is no denying that Veterans can experience a range of stressful situations and events that can have a lasting impact on their mental health. Combat Veterans can have experiences that most of the general population are unable to relate to.

Veterans who are unable to cope with the emotional toll and hardships that have resulted from their service may find themselves turning to alcohol and drugs to cope. While this may initially feel as though it is working, substances tend to compound stress and make things more challenging in the long run.

If you are a Veteran who has been struggling with intrusive thoughts, managing your emotions, and adjusting to civilian life, we want you to know that we are here for you. Our skilled team of medical and mental health professionals will work with you to develop the foundation for your recovery that can support you as you navigate the road ahead of you.

What Makes Veterans Vulnerable to Addiction?

Introduction

What Makes Veterans Vulnerable to Addiction?

With all the research we have on addiction, we are unable to pinpoint the exact cause. We do, however, have a solid understanding of various factors that increase a person’s risk for developing a substance use disorder. When we look at Veterans, we know that the prevalence of trauma and PTSD can play a role in the development of an addiction.

The VA reported that 7% of Veterans will have PTSD at some point in their life, which is higher than the 6% rate seen among the general population. Veterans who were deployed are 3 x more likely to develop PTSD than those who are not.

Veterans who experienced physical injury, and those who were prescribed controlled medications, may also be at a higher risk of developing a substance use disorder. Medications, such as pain medications, are highly addictive medications.

Other factors that can impact a veteran’s risk for substance use disorder include their overall mental health, family history of addiction, and how they are adjusting to civilian life.

How Common is Addiction Among Veterans?

How Common is Addiction Among Veterans?

The 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health: Veteran Adults allowed us to gain some insight into the prevalence of mental health concerns that Veterans have been living with. This showed that approximately 12% of veterans were living with a substance use disorder. Additional findings included that:

  • 7 in every 10 Veterans were struggling with drinking
  • 4 in every 10 Veterans were struggling with drugs
  • 1 in every 8 Veterans were struggling with both alcohol and drug use

Another important detail to be mindful of is the presence of co-occurring mental health concerns. The same 2020 National Survey reported that 1 in every 3 Veterans was living with a serious mental illness and that approximately 1.1 million Veterans were living with a substance use disorder and a mental health concern.

If you are a Veteran who has been unable to control, limit, or reduce your substance use, it is important to share a full account of your mental health concerns. While you may at this point feel as though you are coping with or managing other mental health concerns, research has shown that receiving treatment for both concerns can help you cope with both concerns.

How Specialized Treatment Can
Help You

Specialized treatment options can provide Veterans with support and resources that they may not receive in other areas of the treatment programs. As an example, if a Veteran has been having a difficult time coping with and adjusting to civilian life after active duty or a deployment, they may find that substances help them numb their emotional distress.

Treatment programs for Veterans can focus on the difficulties and challenges that Veterans commonly experience. These treatment programs will only include Veterans, which can provide you with an opportunity to receive validation for your thoughts and experiences. This can help break down any walls that have been keeping you isolated and lonely.

Examples of topics and concerns that can come up in a Veterans group include:

  • Nightmares
  • Anger management
  • Insomnia and other sleep challenges
  • Poor concentration
  • Learning how trauma can affect different areas of your life
  • Depression, PTSD, Anxiety, and other mental health concerns

If you have been thinking about a Veteran’s addiction treatment program, we encourage you to contact Dallas Detox Center. Our representatives are standing by to answer your questions about our treatment options. Call (817)904-2197 today to learn more!

Dallas Detox is a
Texas Drug Rehab for Veterans

A common experience in addiction is a sense of loneliness and isolation. This happens because when we are in active addiction, our focus tends to be on our next use. This can pull us away from those close to us and create distance and discord. Some Veterans find that they struggle with these feelings before they develop a problem with substances. Some Veterans find that they have a hard time adjusting to civilian life after active duty and deployment. These feelings can be a contributing factor to the misuse of drugs and alcohol. Dallas Detox is a Veterans drug rehab located in Weatherford, Texas, that offers inpatient treatment options.
